The purity of gold jewelry is expressed in karats. Pure gold is 24 karat; lower karats are gold mixed with metals such as copper or silver, which makes a piece harder-wearing and allows different tones.
Fineness equivalents
- 24 karat: 999 (pure gold)
- 22 karat: 916
- 18 karat: 750
- 14 karat: 585
- 8 karat: 333
Fineness is the share of gold per 1000 parts. The 585, 750 or 916 stamped on a piece is that ratio.
Which karat for what?
22 karat is popular for bracelets where a high gold content is wanted; 14 or 18 karat is often chosen for rings and wedding bands that see daily wear. In our store the karat and weight of every piece are clearly stated.
